The Johnson’s planted a church in Davis, California in 1961 and pastored there until they moved to southern California in 1967 where he did graduate studies in a Master’s degree in Psychology at Pepperdine University. Subsequently, he served an internship at the American Institute of Family Relations in Los Angeles, and was granted a California State Marriage and Family Therapist license in 1969.
While pastoring in San Francisco Mel served on the District Presbytery as a General Presbyter, representing the Northern California-Nevada Assemblies of God at the national level.
Sharon is actively involved in missions and Rekindle Ministries and is the former chair of Ministry Wives (a fellowship of women whose spouses are in ministry) of the Northern California-Nevada District.
In 2000 Mel and Sharon were commissioned as Assemblies of God missionaries (the second oldest couple to ever be commissioned) and have combined their Rekindle ministry with that of World Missions. Each year they spend three months teaching Pastoral Counseling, Pastoral Ministries, Christian Marriage and Family and other subjects at Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (APTS) in Baguio City, the Philippines where he is a non-resident faculty member. They conduct seminars in various countries for missionaries, pastors and laypeople; and also preach. The Johnson’s are actively involved with AGWM in missionary care.
They have three adult children active in pastoring and other Christian activities.
